Which is the exact reason I need to get translated versions of what has been coming out of Japan and S. Korea lately. Some of the stuff that I have seen has been amazing and really ground-breaking as they could care less about politics and more about a well-crafted piece of art.

I will watch nothing out of Bollywood though. Something about having every movie that comes out of there with a scene that involves 4000 people singing and dancing at the same time just gets old.

That’s right Old Iron, and Sundance is the same thing.

We’d never see a “Clerks” or a “Swingers” or even a “Pulp Fiction” get recognized today.

This process has turned indy filmakers into humorless choads.

-Which is the EXACT reason that small indy-filmmakers have, as a genre, come up with absolutely nothing ground-breaking or inventive in the past 7-10 years. It’s hurdles like this that are preventing the truly inspired from coming forth with something amazing as it has to fit into such well-defined criteria to even be recognized, which in turn wrings all true creativity out of the process. I know I am bemoaning milk that was spilled long ago, but it still sucks to see a process that at it’s inception was a way for indipendent film makers to have an outlet being used for nothing more than a political platform to belch anti-conservative and anti-american sentiment.

In fairness, it’s not like Penn’s criteria varies at all from the norm at Cannes.

Remember, Michael Moore’s piece of shit won the big prize four years ago.

Anti-American, subversive shit always gets the top nod at Cannes, it’s just that Penn is saying it out loud.

He’s still a douchebag though.

Possibly.

But it’s his comments of claiming that “It is impossible to seperate film and politics” and that the winning film would definitely be some representation of the current affairs in the world today.

Penn is the President of the Cannes Judging panel so considering how far left leaning he is you just know that the movie that gets top prize is going to be something completely awful.

Probably some anti-war, global warming film that claims money ties between Hitler, Bush, and Judas Iscariot.

What cracks me up is that he has already laid out his judging criteria prior to any movie really being shown, therefore narrowing the categories that will gain his vote. I think he already has a movie in mind, but this actually segues into another point.

Maybe the reason that all of the shite that comes out of that festival falls into certain categories on a consistant basis (quirky family resolves issues in unique way, sex, or pseudo-political stances on crap topics being the main ones) is that all of the judges, either in a subtle manner (previous voting patterns) or a more outspoken manner (Sean Penn) have dictated the criteria needed to garner an award prior to the festival, and the filmmakers, in order to get some kind of recognition, follow said criteria.
